There are many complaints to be made against mobile games, one of the most legitimate being that without physical controls traditional action games are almost unplayable. A virtual joystick is no substitute for the real thing and that means games like the Metal Slug series just don’t work on a phone or tablet with any degree of accuracy, or even more importantly fun. That’s a fact that’s clearly realised by this new spin-off, although its answer to the problem is barely any more palatable.

For those not familiar with the franchise the Metal Slug games began in 1996 as a series of 2D shooters for SNK’s Neo Geo console and arcade machines. Famed for their highly detailed visuals, smooth animation, and winning sense of humour the games are amongst the best in their genre. They’re not quite as well known as games like Contra and Gunstar Heroes though, because it took some time before other home consoles were powerful enough to run them properly.

Inevitably most of the series is already available on smartphones and although the visuals look as good as ever controlling such a notoriously difficult set of games on a touchscreen is virtually impossible. Which is where the idea of making a mobile strategy game must have come in.

As the name implies this takes most of its inspiration from Tower Defense games, although in wanting to keep Metal Slug’s 2D visual style (and indeed to reuse all the various sprites and animation that’s been accrued over the last 18 years) it does work a bit differently than the classic maze-based template.

The goal in each stage is to destroy the enemy base, which requires you to stream in as many troops as you can afford from the left of the screen to die in glorious combat on the right. You automatically earn more credits as the mission continues and if a unit can stay alive long enough they’ll eventually begin to flash blue and you can then touch them to set off a special move. This can range from throwing a grenade to building a barricade and for a lot of the time choosing when to activate it is one of the few genuine tactical decisions available to you.
